Skunked!

Tonight I became a man.

No self-respecting dog that spends any length of time on Martha's Vineyard has not been skunked. By that I mean had a date with destiny: Mr. Aroma, aka, The Maker of the Most Awesome Scents Of All Time...Mr. Skunk.

Our skunk is affectionately called "Aroma" by the Alphas. But he's no Pepe Le Pew, my friends.

This skunk is ornery and vindictive. He's had it in for me ever since I first set a paw on Martha's Vineyard. In fact, this island is lousy with skunks. I know, 'cause each morning when we set out for town and Ms. Alpha's coffee, I see the road kill. Actually, before I see it, I smell the aftermath.
Tonight, I went outside to do my usual business. I am very good about not straying, but something rustled down by the woods and I just had to rocket off and investigate. I came right back wearing the evidence of my chance meeting with The Skunk.

Was I surprised when I was promptly whisked off for a night time bath. That never happens! The Alphas said I was very lucky 'cause I wasn't too badly perfumed by Aroma. They think I was so fast that I just zoomed through the cloud of anger that Aroma set off.

I am so curious about skunks now. I learned they are black and white, just like me. They also have lush tails and stand at attention, just like I do when I am stacked in the show ring.

Can you see the resemblance?

Poor Fenway! That happened to me too, and Sir Bear. We got a good soaking in a special concoction the Duchess made and then a really soapy bath followed. So I feel your pain!

Effluvia aside, skunks are rather handsome, although not as handsome as YOU, Fenway! We don't have any in France, though, which is why I have not had the pleasure...

Woofs,
Tommy

Oh yeah, looks just like you. But yuck! You are going to be stinky every time it rains I think. I hope this doesn't hurt your career. Maybe if you smell like skunk the other doggies will steer clear of the ring.

Slobbers,
Mango

Wooos! I have heard about them through Mommy and our last BC, Shannon, (at the bridge) who encountered them frequently when we lived in Texas, but I have never seen or smelled one. Mom gave her a bath in tomato juice and lysol, did you have to have a bath too? Yuck!

Yow, watch out, big guy--we're not afraid of much, but we hate those skunks! Sure, they're cute and all, but, eww, that smell!

Look forward to seeing you on the agility circuit! We'll tear em up! :)

Oooh Fenway, you know what was Hershey's nickname when mom first brought her home? It's 'Skunkee' - cos she did look like a skunk and I had to name her after my 'Huskee' of course.. but mom felt that it wasn't too suitable so she became Hershey instead. I much prefer 'Skunkee'..

It must be something about the black and white! Now that you've become a man, it's too bad you'll be too stinky for any of the girls to get close to you!

AWESOME! Where can I get me one of those stink beasts? I wonder if my folks will let me KEEP one as a PET of my very own!!!

I'm so mature now... I can handle a pet. Especially one as fancy as my pal Fenway! I'll take it everywhere with me and show it off. Everyone will love it.
